La coscienza di Zeno

Italo Svevo

Unreliable narrator as a literary device

Notes & Review

Zeno Cosini is one of literature's great self-deceivers. He narrates his own life to his psychoanalyst with complete sincerity — and complete unreliability. Every resolution to quit smoking, every recollection of his marriage, every business deal is filtered through a consciousness that is simultaneously hyperaware and profoundly blind to itself.

What Svevo achieves here is remarkable: by the end of the novel, you don't know whether to trust a single sentence Zeno has written. And yet the portrait feels more psychologically true than any reliable narrator could have produced. The unreliability is the truth.

Published in 1923, it reads as shockingly modern — both in its ironic distance from its protagonist and in its engagement with psychoanalysis as both subject and structural device.
