Infinite Jest
David Foster Wallace
Structure as meaning
Notes & Review
The endnotes aren't a gimmick. The non-linear timeline isn't arbitrary difficulty. In Infinite Jest, the formal structure is inseparable from the content: a book about addiction and entertainment that is itself compulsive and resistant to easy consumption.
Wallace builds a world — a near-future North America of subsidized time, elite junior tennis, and a film so entertaining it incapacitates its viewers — and then refuses to let you passively consume it. You have to work. The endnotes interrupt, complicate, and occasionally contradict the main narrative. The timeline forces you to reconstruct cause and effect manually.
It's a 1,000-page argument that difficulty and discomfort are forms of respect — that giving a reader something too easy is a kind of condescension. Whether or not you agree, it's impossible to forget.
